Kyra was gone too soon. When we adopted an older Golden we knew we wouldn´t have her as long as our others, but two years was too short a time. All the more so because she battled cancer twice during those years. One fight she won the other she didn´t. Knowing what I know now I would still have chosen her. Their is something really special about welcoming a senior Golden Retriever into your home and heart. The day she walked into our house, it was as if she had been here forever. She knew what to do and when to do it. At times we thought she was our other Goldens coming back as angels in her body. Again and again we recognised their mannerisms and actions in the things she did.
One night we thought we had lost her. She hid in the corner of the yard buried in deep snow. We were able to carry her into the garage where we covered her in blankets and heaters. We never left her side. She didn´t even know we were there.
The next morning we were at the vet at 8:00 in the morning to say our last goodbye. But something amazing happened. She jumped up and began barking and kissing the face of everyone who came near. (She won every Best Kisser contest she was ever in). Then she tried to bolt through the outside door. She was telling us she had changed her mind about leaving us that day. We took her home for another 2 weeks. She was so strong, with a bit of a stuuborn streak but finally the cancer made her tired and weak and we had to let her go. Even during the last seconds she was able to eat her favorite Babybel cheese and cover my face with kisses. There is now another Golden angel in Heaven.
